FAMILY AND SCHOOL CONSULTATION

FAMILY AND SCHOOL CONSULTATION: We believe that every child can succeed in school if the right supports are in place. Thus, we offer services and training designed to meet the needs of classroom teachers, special educators, paraprofessionals and assistants, administrators, and parents of children with developmental disabilities, including Autism, Asperger’s Disorder and mental retardation.

EXPERT CONSULTATION: North Shore ARC’s expert consultants implement a collaborative model that includes classroom observation, feedback sessions and attendance at team meetings. Because the involvement of all team members is so critical, consultants are flexible and responsive to the needs of each school they serve. Suggestions and strategies that can be put to work in the classroom are provided, as well as follow-up and troubleshooting.

TRAINING FOR SCHOOL PERSONNEL AND PARENTS: A variety of training formats is available: half-day or day-long workshops, intensive 1:1 or small group sessions, or larger group sessions, as well as 10-hour series to meet PDP requirements. Through sessions designed for teachers, teaching assistants and 1:1 aides, ARC consultants provide clear, easy-to-understand guidelines for making both inclusion classrooms and substantially separate programs work smoothly while meeting the needs of all students and their teachers. Trainings can also be tailored to meet the specific needs of administrators or parents and can focus on a wide variety of topics, listed to the left.

GROUPS FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: Depending on the needs of a particular school district or community, the ARC can coordinate and facilitate groups, including social skills groups, transitional groups (elementary-to-middle school, middle-school-to high school, etc.) or groups focusing on developing vocational and leisure skills or planning for independent living. Social coaching conducted in community settings can also be arranged.
